In order to record greetings or playback voice mail the application needs to know which sound card to use. As well, if the modem is also a speakerphone, the audio channels it uses need to be identified.
Setting the sound fields
First select which sound card the application will use by selecting the record line for that card.
Next you select which channel controls the line for the sound card. If it is simple sound recording you usually need to choose the "Microphone" for recording and "Wave" or "Speakers" for playback.
If the modem is a speakerphone, the application will automatically switch the sound card to the channels selected during detection when in a call. Most frequently the record channel you should select will be "Mono Mix" and the application should anticipate this and pre-select it for you.
In this case, the modem's driver pumps the audio streams to and from the sound card. This means there are two controls to consider for each audio direction, the modem itself with its amplifier and the sound card.
In order to achieve the best possible sound quality (tune the line) you need to establish a voice call while you are in front of the computer and open the control panel "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon opening the window to the "Audio" tab.
Press the "volume" button to open the master volume control window for each direction, recording and playback. As mentioned above, the application will have swapped the audio channels of the sound card to the channels you selected during modem detection. In this case we are showing the recording level controls as this is the most likely one requiring adjustment.
Adjust the control both on the control panel as well as the volume sliders of Skype Forwarder connection window.
